Belles in Monica were a hip hop crew active until 2003 when they would release their final single “Smoke Filled Rooms”.
In 2002, their album “Resistance is Futile” spawned a number of notable singles including “Y’All Under Surveillance” and “Meltdown” which received widespread radio and club play including regular support by host of BBC Radio 1’s flagship early evening show Steve Lamacq.
Pre-dating the internet era, they featured in a wide selection of key specialist printed publications including “Hip Hop Connection”, “Blues & Soul”, “Echoes” and had regular entries in DJ Magazine’s hip hop club charts.
Released on vinyl and CD formats, the singles reached an extended international audience and included remixes by Phi Life Cypher’s DJ Nappa, UK DMC finalist Krash Slaughta, Unsung Heroes and many more, while their music was also used in the soundtracks for a variety of tv and film productions.
To celebrate the re-launch of the label, they put together a special one-off EP “Natsukashii”, a compilation of substantially re-worked originals and previously unreleased cuts which released on June 7th 2019. The second in the ‘Lazarus’ series, it followed April 2019’s “Y’All in Meltdown” EP which features all of the originals and remixes of their first two singles including versions never before made publicly available.
A further EP, “Krash Slaughta v B.I.M. – ’18 Showdown” comprises all of the remixes recorded by the scratch master turntablist and releases on December 6th 2019
All released through New Dawn Records (Digital). More information will be available at our RELEASES and STORE pages.
